Spotlight: Ashley Longshore
The Louisiana-based painter is making waves in the artistic sphere with her fun and quirky paintings and sculptures. Featured in numerous prominent magazines including Vogue, Bazaar, and Forbes, the young artist and gallery owner has been branded a visionary and claimed to be the next Andy Warhol. As she began selling her paintings she recognized the power that social media platforms like Instagram held, and she utilized it to her advantage. Garnering the attention of numerous celebrity clientele and big name fashion suppliers, the artist’s unique paintings and sculpture have been widely popular and sold for top dollar.
The artist herself describes her creations as pop art and as such, uses popular culture as the basis for most of her works. Some of her work was also featured in Bergdorf Goodman, landing her the title of the first female solo artist ever to do an exhibition for the high fashion retailer. On top of her other numerous awards, the entrepreneur can add author, as she has published a book titled You Don’t Look Fat, You Look Crazy: An Unapologetic Guide to Being Ambitchous. I fully plan on purchasing the book to learn how to be “ambitchous.”
What I personally liked about the artist was her I would describe her style as a caricature of modern trends and poking fun at the colloquially dubbed “basic bitch” lifestyle. I find her use of pop culture figures, trends, and memes to be incredibly smart, because it would naturally gather some form of press. Her edgy, yet playful pieces have been captivating and extremely well-thought out. I also think her use of social media and being cognisant of its ability to expand her audience, as well as, give her the potential to become a viral sensation–both of which have occurred.
