It’s no surprise that celebrity culture pervades much of the fashion choices seen on the runways and likewise in popular urban street style. 2013 seems to be the year of the ‘femme gangster’ on the cat walk as designers are borrowing trends from singers and celebrities. After watching celebrities like Rihanna strut to and from the paparazzi it’s clear that the trend isn’t going anywhere.
Trends that are essentially major within the realm of ‘femme gangster’ style right now blend classic elements like gold jewelry stacked high mixed in with a feminine twist.
Rose gold, yellow gold and silver rings are now being piled high on top of cat-like fingers. Stiletto nails specifically made their way back onto the fashion scene when singer Lana Del Rey crooned she was “Born to Die” with long ox-blood colored claws reminiscent of the 60’s echoing Jackie O and Priscilla Presley, among others. The trend has come full circle with everyone from Rihanna to Adele and Lady Gaga sporting the look. Celebrities establish their own version of “gangster” by donning multiple finger and wrist tattoos along with added layers of gold and silver double rings.
Wild rings were spotted everywhere at New York Fashion Week, and one of the must-haves that made the Harper’s Bazaar list include stackable knuckle rings from new designer Lynn Ban.
Time will only tell if any ‘femme gangsters’ will start appearing at Wake Forest. There’s always the opportunity of Halloween to showcase some of the outlandish style trends influencing Hollywood. My only hope is that our campus doesn’t turn into the video “23” by Mike WiLL Made-It ft. Miley Cyrus, Juicy J & Wiz Khalifa.
