Even though there’s nothing quite like being pampered at the spa, spa treatments are often expensive and very time consuming. So, a great alternative is creating a DIY spa day. One of my favorite things to do whenever I’m bored on a summer day is to get creative, rummage through my kitchen, and create homemade skin care products. Not only are the products easy to make, but they also have amazing benefits for your skin.
After researching the benefits of different foods I found in my refrigerator and pantry, I came up with a scrub, cleanser, and face mask that are all quick, inexpensive, and easy to make.
Summer Sugar Scrub
2 egg whites
1/3 cup of sugar
1/3 cup of oatmeal
1 teaspoon of lemon juice
1 Grated lemon peel
Put the egg whites, sugar, oatmeal, and lemon juice in a bowl and stir. Then add grated lemon peel into the mixture and sprinkle some on top to add texture to the scrub. The oatmeal and sugar are both great natural exfoliators because the two different textures allow you to exfoliate every inch of your face while still being gentle on the sensitive parts of your skin. The egg whites help to improve skin tone and elasticity, and the lemon juice and lemon peel create a refreshing smell and add to the texture.
Antioxidant Facial Cleanser
14 organic blueberries
2 tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon of lemon juice
1 spring of mint
Mash the blueberries with a fork and add them to a bowl. Add the Greek yogurt and lemon juice to the bowl and stir until it is a smooth consistency. Tear the mint leaves into small pieces and add them to the mixture. This cleanser has lots of great properties that will help your skin look great during the hot summer months. The blueberries act to soften dry skin, while the lemon juice is a great natural toner. In addition, the Greek yogurt is very moisturizing. This cleanser is great for all skin types and is not over drying!
1/2 of an avocado
1 teaspoon of honey
2 teaspoons of Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon of avocado oil
This facemask is probably my favorite skincare product of the three. It is not only fun to make, but it feels amazing on your skin (especially if you sat out in the sun too long and ended up with a sunburn). The avocado and Greek yogurt are both extremely moisturizing and soothing when applied to the face. But the best thing about this product is that it will not break you out because honey is a naturally antibacterial—so this mask is great for acne prone skin. Finally the avocado oil helps to repair skin and create the soft texture of the mask.
Not only are these skincare products easy and fun to make, they are also amazing for your skin. Also, the recipes can be adapted, so don’t worry if you don’t have every ingredient or if you just want to get creative and give the recipes your own twist!
