Revenge of the Nerds: A WFU Photo Diary on Glasses

I remember being absolutely horrified—me, glasses?! Absolutely not. At the ripe and angst-filled age of 15, I was definitely NOT ready to be a four-eyed loser. Or, at least, that’s what I thought.

I tried to make contacts work. I woke up hours in advance of school, but consistently failed at putting the uncomfortable, annoying contacts in my eyes, and  after weeks of unsuccessful attempts, I accepted my fate: I was going to have to make glasses work.

With a little help from the Internet, I discovered Warby Parker. A hip and affordable glasses brand that gave me the option to pick a few frames I liked, try them on, and then decide on the ones that looked best. From that day on, I was hooked.

Now, I am obsessed with my glasses. I have two pairs, both from Oliver Peoples, and I get more compliments on them than anything else I ever wear. If you look around, glasses are absolutely everywhere. They’ve become a staple fashion accessory for celebrities, designers, college students, and more.

People are embracing their nerd status rather than running away from it. To encourage everyone to embrace their inner nerds, I talked to a few of my friends about their glasses and why they love them so much! I also included myself and my favorite fashion staple—my glasses!

How’d you pick them? “I went into it thinking I wanted a clear, round frame. Then, I realized that I need to pick what fits my face, not the trendy fame. Square frame is a classic and I love the color because it complements my eyes and hair.”

Favorite thing? “How they go with everything”

How’d you pick them? I stalked them both on the Oliver Peoples website for so long! My mom got me the brown pair when I first came to Wake. I got the second pair for Christmas!

Favorite thing? The brown pair, I love their shape and how they’re a little bit lighter in color; I think it
compliments my skin tone. The clear pair, I love that they’re a little edgier/trendier than I ever really am!

I hope you feel encouraged to rock your inner nerd—everyone’s doing it!
