Kayla Maryly, a freshman at the Fashion Institute of Technology, is taking over the streets of New York City with her chic ensembles fit for a college student’s price range. The Style Genre is sure to give you fashion inspiration that’s trendy, yet tame enough to sport around campus. Kayla aspires to have her own clothing line down the road. As the popularity of her blog increases and her Instagram followers are doubling, I was lucky enough to sit down with Kayla to learn more about her blog, The Style Genre.

What inspired you to start The Style Genre?
“I’ve always loved looking and being inspired by other bloggers, so when creating a blog of my own was assigned as a project in my fashion marketing class senior year I got totally hooked!”

How would you describe your style?
“I would describe my style as being feminine and vintage-inspired. I’ve attempted to play around with trendier pieces, but usually tend to stick to a more classic look in general.”

Has living in New York influenced your style, and if so, how?
“I definitely think living in New York has helped me streamline my style, and I’ve found myself leaning towards a couple edgier things that I never would’ve been attracted to in the past. They aren’t kidding about New Yorkers loving black either—I feel like everything I’ve bought lately has been black!”

How do you keep up with the trends while still being on a college student budget?
“Since the majority of my wardrobe and clothing purchases are more neutral and classic, I actually find it relatively easy to mix in a few trendy pieces by shopping at fast fashion stores like Forever 21 and H&M. That way you don’t spend a lot of money on something that’s in all likelihood going to be out of style next season.”

What goals do you have for your blog?
“I don’t really have any goals for my blog, since I consider it more of a hobby. I do love connecting with other creative-minded people though, and I find that blogging often creates a great base for that.”

Where do you see yourself career-wise in ten years?
“Career-wise I definitely want to stick with my major and be doing some type of fashion design. The ultimate goal would be to have my own line someday, so I can always dream about that happening!”

How do you balance being a full time student at FIT and still keeping up with the blog?
“It’s definitely a bit crazy, but I love doing it so it isn’t hard to find time. My suitemates blog as well, so it’s kind-of turned into a bonding activity for us to wander around the city and take photos.”

Do you have any advice for beginner bloggers?
“Just have fun with it and stay true to yourself and your style! Ultimately it’s about creating whatever YOU want to create—a blog allows you to be the creative director of whatever material you want to share.”
