Top 5 Reasons to Pursue a Southwest Campus Reach Internship

Finding the perfect internship can be overwhelming. Going into my Junior year, I had no idea what industry I wanted to go into, let alone a strong idea of what companies might be a good fit. Luckily, one day while stumbling through the Wake Forest Handshake portal, I found that Southwest had lots of Internship opportunities and I decided to apply on a whim.

Well thank goodness for that whim! This summer, I had the absolute privilege of working at Southwest as the Marketing Department Operations and Planning Intern. Going into the experience, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. For any students wondering if the program might be a good fit for them as well, here are my top 5 reasons to apply to a Campus Reach Internship.

1. Campus Reach Internships provide highly valuable work experience.

Southwest is most certainly not a “coffee and copies” internship. Beyond being one of the most competitive internship programs in the country–with over 31,000 applicants last year for 160 positions–every day Interns are provided meaningful work. During my time as the Marketing Department Operations and Planning Intern, I regularly worked with Directors to produce long-term strategy and plan at the Department and even Company level. Other Marketing Interns got to go on-set at commercial shoots, assist in the launch of a new credit card, and meet Customers on experiential marketing trips—just a sample of some of the diligent work that Interns did this summer.

Here’s our class picture taken on National Intern Day! In addition to Summer 2018 Interns, Full-time Employees who were past Interns joined us to celebrate.

2. Southwest Interns become a part of Southwest Culture.

Interns are given tons of opportunities to engage with the award-winning Culture. In 2018 alone, Southwest was named a Forbes’ Best Employer for Women, Military Times’ Best for Vets Employer and an Indeed Best Place to Work (#2).

Working at Southwest, you’ll learn all about Warrior Spirit, Servant’s Heart and Fun-LUVing attitude, meaning you can balance the daily work grind with service opportunities and time to bond with Co-Hearts. A highlight of my summer was volunteering with my fellow Interns at the North Texas Food Bank, a combination of all three components of the Southwest Way.

One of my favorite day-in-the-field visits was to Network Operations Control! It was so fun getting to see a different side of the business.

3. Development opportunities are everywhere during your Campus Reach Internship.

One of the most impressive things about Southwest was how much everyone was invested in every Intern’s personal and professional success. Campus Reach put on multiple events to help us grow, providing sessions on Myers Briggs, Feedback and opportunities to explore other Departments.

My manager constantly went out of her way to provide opportunities for me to explore what I was interested in. In Marketing, we received training on CliftonStrengths, presentation, received personal mentors and presented Capstone presentations to the entire Department!

I was so proud to watch all my fellow Marketing Interns present their Capstone presentations! I was so impressed to see what we accomplished in just 12 weeks.

4. Southwest Interns participate in Company flight benefits.

One of the coolest perks to this job is that Interns can fly on Southwest flights for free! Non-reving (company slang for free Employee travel) is truly more art than science as Interns spend the summer racing to the airport at 5 pm on Friday to catch a flight—any flight—with open space. I spent a lot of time this summer traveling with other Interns all over the country, which was a great way to explore and make new friends. My friend Jez even took 90 flights in just 12 weeks!

One of my favorite trips was to Disneyland in California with my fellow Interns.

5. Southwest is a company you will be proud to work for.

Southwest is a truly one-of-a-kind, amazing place—a fact that Interns are regularly reminded of. Between outstanding culture, a booming business and some of the greatest people you’ll ever meet, every Employee is genuinely proud to be a part of the Southwest Family.

I am so proud to have been a part of an amazing organization. Getting up for work every day this summer was genuinely exciting. For any college students looking for the next step in their careers, apply to Southwest—you won’t regret it.
