Hailing from Southwest Florida, growing up as a beachy girl taught me to not only appreciate winter as an opportunity to try on beautifully tailored winter coats, but it also made me recognize how much the cooler weather allows for perfectly made-up skin. When I studied abroad in London I was so surprised that although I was freezing, my hair and makeup stayed in place all day well into the night time. I never had to conduct any touch-ups like I did in Florida from the smouldering heat that literally melts off foundation.
As Wake Forest moves into colder zones, I’m looking to try out some very hot trends that will make the frigid temperatures that much more bearable. The backstage shots taken at Fashion Week reveal that the retro ‘60s cat eye that I donned every day in London is still very much in vogue, but if you’re not feeling that look this winter, I encourage you to try out one or more of the following trends (just not all at the same time, please):
- The “Dewy” Face
Leave it to Victoria Beckham to craft a beautifully matte look for her models. The “finished skin” face can be achieved by applying an all-over coat of foundation then liberally sweeping powder to set in the look. Follow by lightly lining the eyes with thin black liquid eyeliner and mascara. Skip blush entirely or use very sparingly (crazy for me to even write). This look was spotted everywhere from Victoria Beckham to Stella McCartney and Balmain.
- Tools to help achieve the look: My absolute favorite is the Pixie Flawless Finishing Powder – .26 oz. Available at Target.
2. It’s all in the Brows?
Feature brows stole the show at Rochas and Chanel as it-girl Cara Delevingne shows fashion bloggers how it’s really done. Although growing out a distinguised brow can be rather powerful, please remember to groom. Brows can be neat yet strong if you want to dominate the halls like Cara did in London.
3. Petal-Stained Lips
Stained lips with a petal pink effect reigned supreme at Christian Dior while darker, berry matte shades dominated Prada and Vera Wang. Rather than painted, the stained lip effect was achieved by diffusing color from the inner part of the lip outwards.
- Tools to help achieve the look: LipSurgence Matte Lip Tint by TARTE. Available in 5 colors, Sephora.
4. It’s all in the Eyes
For the true fashion risk-takers, heavily made up, dark eyes are the way to go this season. Purple and red metallic shadows were brushed all the way up to the brow line at Gucci and Jason Wu. Even all black shadow was prevalent at Marc Jacobs and Roberto Cavalli. If I spot a deaconette traipsing the quad with lids made up like the models, I’d probably bow down in reverent worship.
- Tools to help achieve the look: Devilishly Dark Eye Shadow X4 by MAC Cosmetics. Available Online.
Enjoy experimenting with these beauty trends as the temperatures continue to drop. Beauty isn’t about copying but rather seeking inspiration in order to format that oh-so signature look.
