With only fourteen days left until the Met Gala the fashion world is abuzz with excitement. Outfit predictions flash across news outlets and social media as fans speculate what will go down on May 1st.
What should we expect?
The most important thing to consider is the theme for this event. Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019) was a fashion giant that served us looks for over seven decades from iconic houses such as Fendi, Chloe, Balmain, and Chanel. Lagerfeld successfully chartered Chanel’s revival in the 1980s which boosted him to celebrity status. He went on to create his own eponymous label. Karl Lagerfeld alone represents thousands of garments that serve as some of the world’s most relevant pieces of fashion history.
As a precursor to the exhibition and red carpet event, Vogue invited 9 designers to “reinterpret Karl Lagerfeld’s Fashion Legacy” for their May cover shoot. The content was filmed at the Grand Palais in Paris. Pierpaolo Piccolo, John Galliano, Donatella Versace, Chitose Abe, Olivier Rousteing, Thom Browne, Christopher John Rogers, Jun Takahashi, and Simone Rocha.
Each budding designer created a look that was inspired by something that Lagerfeld made during his time as a creative director at one of the many brands he worked for. These outfits also provide inspiration for the approaching event. The incredible range of styles that these 9 designers portrayed with their looks is a preview for what is to come.
Karl Lagerfeld was a master at many different aesthetics and his years of experience and work reflects this. Expect designers to pull inspiration from every era, every nook and cranny from Lagerfeld’s life.
This year will be a red carpet to remember. The dress code is simply “In Honor of Karl.” Guests and designers have the opportunity to wear Karl’s creations or interpret a new look inspired by him. Tune in to the livestream in two weeks to watch the glamorous community of the rich and famous don their best outfits and show them off to the world.
