What-to-Wear: Isolation Edition

By Margaret Rand

I’m sure we have all noticed the influx of clothing ads while scrolling through Instagram or the to-die-for matching pajama and sweatpant sets that our favorite celebrities are wearing while dancing on Tik Tok. That said, there are so many sales online right now due to the coronavirus pandemic that is sadly shutting down businesses, particularly the retail industry. While I’m sure you’re thinking, “what on earth could I need right now with nowhere to go and no one to see?,” I’ve been looking for the most comfortable and effortlessly chic sweat sets to get us through quarantine.

All over IG, I’ve drooled over the latest trends of tie dye and sweatpant sets with matching crop tops or hoodies, and decided to write about how to still look fashion forward from your bed. Between short trips to the supermarket or family walks in the park or around the neighborhood, it’s always nice to have an easy, matching hoodie and sweatpants set to throw on. The fashion-model-bff duo, Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner, are the queens of rocking these matching sets, paired with cropped puffer jackets on chilly days and cropped halter tops on warmer days. I’ve also noticed the iconic ‘dad’ New Balance sneakers that have made their way from fraternity basements to the streets of NY and London: The iconic New Balance 990v5 is known for being “worn by supermodels in London and dads in Ohio” and is the perfect, comfortable sneaker to pair with these sets. Another idea is pairing simple Nike track sneakers or Air Force 1’s in black or white with colorful sets, or if you’re going for a more colorful Nike Air Force 1 high top, pair with a minimalist sweat set to bring a pop of color.

Tie-dye matching sweat sets and matching pajama pants sets have also come into the spotlight. From famous artists, such as Rihanna and Justin Bieber to actors and actresses, such as Sophie Turner, these trends are seen throughout the world of celebrities. Even supermodels, such as Emily Ratajkowski and Gigi Hadid, who have long mastered the effortless yet sophisticated sweats look while running from castings to shoots and fashion shows, have continued to explore new trends, even taking to satin pajamas with booties and heels.

That said, I’ve noticed celebrities, fashion gurus and influencers on the streets of NY complete a more up-scale sweatpants look by layering a blazer, adding on sunglasses, or wearing a monochrome matching set.

While some of these celebrity sets are on the pricier side from brands such as Essentials, Off-White, MadHappy, Cherry LA, Palm Angels, and Justin Bieber’s new sweats brand, Drew House, there are easy ways to still look effortlessly chic in sweatpants at an affordable price. From simply starting a new project by buying bleach from your nearby drugstore and creating your own tie-dye sets, to scrolling through ASOS and Zara for tanks and sweatpants to pair, there are so many ways to copy your favorite celebrities’ effortless sweat sets at more affordable prices. Recently, I’ve seen sales on Nordstrom, in particular, with amazing tie dye and monochrome hoodie and sweat sets. Another idea if you are on the trendier side, is scrolling through TheRealReal, a high-end consignment online shop, for higher-end sweats brands. Needless-to-say, the online shopping world is yours in the next few weeks (or months…), but don’t forget to take some time to clean out your own closet and re-visit some old sweats or tank tops and make them your own by cropping or tie dying ! A great way to pass some time in quarantine is to recreate these looks from your very own closet - which is not only the MOST affordable way to revamp your style but also the most sustainable !
